Fianna Fail survey finds Keaveney closing in on Kitt seat in Galway East

Opinion polls conducted by Fianna Fail across County Galway have thrown up some interesting results – although the party is still facing the prospect of winning just one seat in each of the two constituencies.

But according to senior Fianna Fail sources, it does not give veteran TD Micheal Kitt as safe a seat as many would believe.

It is understood that the poll revealed that Kitt and Deputy Colm Keaveney are running ‘neck and neck’.

Galway East has been reduced to a three-seater which means that the main parties are looking at winning just one seat with the remaining seat going, most likely, to an independent.

However, it is understood that the poll, which was conducted several weeks back, also shows that Sinn Fein is polling well. Its candidate is likely to be Gabe Cronnolly in Athenry.

It seems that the poll in Galway East suggests that the three seats will go to sitting TD Paul Connaughton of Fine Gael, independent Cllr. Sean Canney – but then there is a battle on the cards between Kitt and Keaveney for the Fianna Fail seat.
